Marta & Hank Land- Owners
Marta & Hank Land bought House of Flowers the week before Mother's Day in May 1998. (Talk about a baptism by fire!) Hank is a Retired Lt. Col. U.S. Army as well as retired Shawnee, Oklahoma Chief of Police. He is the shop "cook," making sure everyone is happy and fed during those extra long holiday hours. He also helps to keep the peace between all those "creative, sensitive" females! Marta is a graduate of the University of Oklahoma with a degree in design. Her philosophy in life is "Make sure that you are doing what you love! Life is too short to be unhappy. I wake up every day loving life and what I am doing. People are my top priority. As long as I am able to make others happy it's easy to stay happy myself." The true loves of her life are her six beautiful grandsons and one perfect granddaughter. When you see her, ask to see the pictures and you will be a friend for life! Marta is a former President of Oklahoma State Florists Association. She is also extremely active in the local Shawnee community, serving on several boards and committees.
Designers and Staff
Our designers have more than 60 years of combined floral designing experience. They have seen many trends come and go, but superior customer service has always been a standard at House of Flowers.
Jessie Hammond, Shop Manager
Jessie is responsible for everything in the shop from toilets to Tussie Mussies. She began her floral career in the late 80s and has won awards in flora-culture. Jessie earned a scholarship to the Teleflora Education Center and will be attending classes this spring and summer. She worked in Purcell, Okla., for many years before she and her husband Ray moved to Shawnee. If Jessie ever offers you a piece of her "orange cake," take it! It is "to die for!" Jessie is also the resident fudge queen. She is never afraid to try new flavors and has created some delicious specialty favorites. Remember fudge samples are always free and Jessie loves to share!
Shelly Beltz, Designer
Shelly was born and raised in Shawnee and is now happily married to a mailman. She has two grown children but is still waiting for that first grandchild. In her "younger days," Shelly worked as a florist for 10 years and as a tech in the Physical Therapy Dept. at the Shawnee Hospital for 8 years. Shelly says, "I really enjoyed that but I needed to be more creative. I started building and painting furniture with the help of my husband. We also make other crafty things and sell them at craft shows on the weekends. I found the time to be creative with flowers again. I am enjoying it a whole lot more than I did in my younger days. Maybe it's the shop I work at now because House of Flowers has great people!" House of Flowers sells some of Shelly's redone furniture in the shop. Stop by and take a look!
Betty Brown, Designer
Betty has been working for House of Flowers for more than 20 years. She was the recipient of the "Greater Shawnee Employee of the Month" for demonstrating a friendly, courteous attitude that has encouraged thousands of area shoppers. Betty's motto is "If you make beautiful flowers, they will BUY them!" Betty's specialty is "high style" designs. Applying the elements and principles of design helps her create her signature arrangements that her customers know and love. Betty's wedding work is second to none. Her creative flair lends a distinctive sophisticated look.
Diane Blakemore, Sales and Delivery Associate
Diane taught elementary school for 18 years. She is the mother of two boys and grandmother of four. A longtime Shawnee resident, she and Marta have been friends for more than 20 years. Diane loves to travel, read, play the piano and listen to music. She is a graduate of Oklahoma Baptist University, Cum Laude. Diane says, "I love working with people and helping them pick the best flowers to accommodate every occasion."
Hannah Adams, Delivery Associate
Born and raised in Colorado, Hannah came out to Shawnee to attend Oklahoma Baptist University. She is currently finishing up her freshmen year working toward obtaining a bachelors degree in nursing. Hannah enjoys spending time outside, whether it is walking, running, or hanging in her hammock, enjoying the Oklahoma breeze, or wind storm depending on the day. Since Hannah is new to Shawnee and doesn't have a car, she especially enjoys delivering for House of Flowers because she gets to know Shawnee better each week.
